Imagine having billions of dollars like Elon Musk, what would you spend it on? An awesome car? A mansion? Vacations all around the world? Ok, you still have billions of dollars though, even after all that spending. I’m sure many of us would also donate to at least one charity. Does Elon Musk give to Charity?
Elon Musk is big into philanthropy, though it appears that he doesn’t put a lot of money into the website for his foundation The Musk Foundation, which is a private grant-funding foundation, as its only a list of the five areas in which he, and his brother Kimal, donate grants to.
His foundation’s website might be sparse, but his charitable donations are anything but. Neither is the list of where he contributes to, whether it’s trees, water filters, education, or sustainable energy, Musk has no problem letting go of his money to help others.
The Musk Foundation
According to their website, The Musk Foundation, the foundation provides grants to the following areas:
- Renewable energy research and advocacy
- Human space exploration research and advocacy
- Pediatric research
- Science and engineering education
- Development of safe artificial intelligence to benefit humanity
It’s pretty vague, and by the looks of things, the website has been like this for years now. Through the years there have been notable donations to over 160 charities, totaling more than $54 million. Who needs a fancy website with numbers like that?
The Giving Pledge
Taken from their website, “The Giving Pledge is a movement of philanthropists who commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes, either during their lifetimes or in their wills.”.
It’s almost like a secret society for billionaires and Elon Musk is one of those wealthy people who have committed to the pledge. In order to qualify to take the pledge, you have to have at least $1 billion of personal wealth. Or would have that much save for donations to charity. The thought is almost unfathomable, especially when you see their website and the number of people who have already taken the pledge. I don’t know about you, but I had no idea there were that many billionaires in the world. Kudos to them for helping others.
Arbor Day Foundation
YouTuber Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson started to campaign in 2019 for a fundraiser to raise $20 million from fellow YouTuber, for a climate change initiative. The ongoing fundraiser is being hosted by the Arbor Day Foundation, with a catchy slogan of #teamtrees.
The initiative is fundraising by offering $1 per tree for planting. The trees will be planted all around the globe, save for Antarctica, and the types of trees will depend on location, so that they can ensure native species are planted.
Musk pledged $1 million dollars to plant 1 million trees. With this pledge, he was atop the leaderboard, until Canadian billionaire, and Shopify founder, Tobi Lutke donated one more tree than Musk.
In the end, MrBeast reached his goal, and over 22 million trees will be planted throughout the world, thanks to charitable donations from many donors, whether they donated a million trees, or one.
Humanitarian Efforts
In addition to the areas we’ve already mentioned, Musk has given to many others, including humanitarian efforts when it felt like areas had been forgotten about. He answered a call to help rebuild the infrastructure of Puerto Rico after the island was devastated by a 2017 hurricane.
He also answered the call to help with the Flint, Michigan water problem that has been ongoing since 2014. In 2018 he pledged to help the people of Flint, and started installing fountains, with a water filtration system, into the area’s schools.
Musk donated a whopping $15 million to the Global Learning XPRIZE humanitarian effort that aims to improve education around the world, concentrating on making education available to those who may not have it readily available.
I’m almost positive that this is not an exhaustive list of his charitable work, but it is enough to show you that Elon Musk does, in fact, donate a good amount of money to charitable efforts.
