Alessia Cara, the funny and talented singer who made her break through with her debut single ‘Here’ that got over 1 million streams on Spotify, and 38 million views on YouTube is the artist to watch in 2016. She followed in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and 5 Seconds of Summer by posting covers of songs she liked on YouTube and got noticed, eventually signing on to Def Jam Recordings and is now releasing beautiful music to our ears.
Her single ‘Here’ which was #1 on Spotify’s top viral tracks for the US was actually written about a party she went to a few years ago, and how she hated being there. Who wouldn’t relate to that? Being dragged along to a party yet wanting nothing more than to be chilling at home on Netflix. “I’m not completely antisocial, but those big crazy parties where everyone’s drunk are not for me,” she said to Rolling Stones about the single.
This year has been amazing for her. She got invited (yes,I mean personally invited) by the one and only Taylor Swift to perform ‘Here’ to 55,000 people on Taylor’s 1989 World Tour in Tampa. Taylor also got to interview Alessia and talk about her first album ‘Know-It-All’ which was released in November.
She performed at the Jingle Bell Ball with artists such as Tove Lo, Shawn Mendes and Calvin Harris and also did an amazing cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ as part of her set. If the album release’s, interviews with Ellen Degeneres and performing on stages to mass crowds wasn’t enough, she’s going on her Know-It-All tour around the US next year.
She’s done a few covers of other songs this year like ‘Hotline Bling’, ‘Bad Blood’, ‘Can’t Feel My Face’, ‘Stitches’ and my personal favorite cover of hers this year is ‘LEVELS’ by Nick Jonas. Nick himself was impressed and gave her a shout out on Twitter.
Watch her cover of ‘LEVELS’ here and don’t forget to tweet us @CelebMix what you think:
